Vestiaire Collective: Discover Long Live Fashion

Vestiaire is a ‘Mind-set’ brand that stands for their vision to transform fashion industry for sustainability. They stand for their ideals, and for living a specific lifestyle.

Vestiaire is beyond a traditionally run company but a Fashion Activist Brand. Their values are: Activism, Dedication, Greatness, Transparency, Community

I am will be honest, I was never really into vintage clothing, or ‘pre-loved’, 2nd hand fashion; these words always reminded me of old antique shops that has a particular smell that I personally did not enjoy yet I know some people just loved it, all the better for our world.

I love using my own mother’s, grand mother’s vintage fashion items but when it came to using it from people that I personally did not know and have no emotional connection felt a little odd to me. Maybe I was old-fashioned, closed-mind or traditional as well.

Then came VESTIAIRE, a digital platform, fashion activist, pioneer, innovator and educator working with a vision and a mission I believe in: to do better for mother earth and that I can relate to.  When a company touches the heart of people, that is when you know they are a strong brand -  living with purpose. Headquartered in Paris, founded by Fanny Moizant and Sophie Hersan in 2009 to fight fashion waste by giving a second life to clothing, Vestiaire started to open my mind and encouraged me to educate myself on the current status of the Fashion industry.

Here are some facts to know:

  • Fashion is the most polluting industry

  • Clothing consumption expected to rise 63% by 2030

  • We wear the items we buy 40% less compared to 10 years ago

  • In the past 15 years production doubled with less quality

  • 3 out of 5 fashion items end up in the land fill

  • 15 million fashion items end up in Kantamanto every week to be filtered. 4% of it goes directly to waste causing environmental devastation

Stunning numbers and this is only a tiny portion of the information, but I believe enough for us to start to choose consciously and make educated choices.

 What is Vestiaire doing:

  • Creating a circular luxury market

  • Instead of fueling, working on encouraging elimination of overconsumption, overproduction and climate change effects to transform into a sustainable future.

  • End of November, it said no to fast fashion

  • 100% reduced recycled recyclable package

  • Working on tackling their carbon foot print

  • Creating a collective community and educating

  • Empowering brands to open to the re-sell market

These choices are acts not against Fashion but for Fashion.

To make sure, each item is valued and not see as a temporary item in our lives.

Hence the idea; Long live Fashion

There is a certain philosophy and purpose behind every action of Vestiaire and that makes it a strong brand. This is the attitude I hope to inspire and motive in all of us.

To buy less, buy better, wear more, care more

As Fanny Moziant said in the Change Makers event,

“it is important to see ourselves not as ‘consumers’ but as ‘citizens’  We are all responsible in each action.”

Make it Stand out

There is also something fun, adventures and excitement about shopping pre-loved fashion – the feeling of discovering, hunting down a unique piece of clothing rather than following and wearing mass produced fashion items.

For those interested in the business side of the brand, and putting your money where it mattes:

  • Vestiaire is valued at $1.7 billion on September

  • Kering group among other funds have invested in the company – raised $209 in 2021

  • Boston Consulting group expects global resale market will be $40 billion

  • Global Data Group expects second hand could be $77 billion by 2025

  • Asia pacific has the fastest growing second hand market, it was 150% in 2021

Second hand is good for the health of planet earth, human health and healthy business growth – and that’s when realistic true positive change starts to happen.

 Thank you, Selin
